People cannot escape the effects of aging. Overtime, the body will show signs of degeneration from the skin to different organs of the body. An organ that is going to be greatly affected would be a person's eyes. Most elderly will experience problems with their eyes as their age will progress. To address this, studies such as AREDS II have been conducted.

AREDS II is the shortened version of Age Related Disease Study 2. It was done as a follow up to a similar study that was done a few years ago. This study aims to uncover the effectiveness of using different vitamin supplements in order to stop or to slow down the degeneration of ones vision.

Its main objective is to do something about AMD or age related macular degeneration. This is a condition where in the macula would start to lose its function due to aging. This condition is the number one cause as to why there are many seniors that are suffering from vision loss.

This study is also applicable for other types of vision problems. A good example would be cataract. People with cataract suffer from blurry eyes mainly because of a cloudy substance forming on the lens making it hard for them to see clearly.

In this study, what researchers do is conduct studies on seniors with vision problems and those that are prone to contract them. They give doses of vision vitamins to see if these substances can have a good effect on them. They use substances like Omega 3, lutein, zeaxanthin, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C.

Most of these nutrients are abundant is many kinds of plants while a few of them can be derived from animal products. Salmon is known to be rich in Omega 3. You can consume beta carotene by eating bright colored fruits and vegetables. Spinach is one of the vegetables rich in lutein and zeaxanthin.

By doing the study, scientists can get more knowledge as to how use the substances can be used. This allows them to make different eye supplements that can be used by many people. The supplements make it easier for people to the right amount of vision vitamins they need.

AREDS II is a study that can benefit everyone. The result of the study can be used to alleviate the problems that the elderly have with their eyes. It can also help the younger generation by making sure that they can do something to keep their eye healthy as they grow older.
